Tensions remain high in both Houses of the Parliament as the Centre introduced the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, amid a rancorous dispute with the opposition. ONOP has been a long-standing poll promise of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
‘The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024′ and ‘The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024’ – which propose simultaneous elections to both Lok Sabha and state assemblies were introduced in the Parliament on Tuesday with 269 members voting in favour and 198 against it.
Political acrimony between the Centre and the opposition intensified as Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the Congress in the Rajya Sabha, accusing former PMs Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi of making amendments in the constitution to serve one party’s interests. He said the Grand Old Party wants to increase reservation for Muslims by reducing quota for other backward classes.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge lashed out at Shah for insulting BR Ambedkar, saying the “insult” of Babasaheb by the home minister “has once again proven that the BJP-RSS were against the tricolour, their forefathers opposed the Ashok Chakra and the people of the Sangh Parivar wanted to implement Manusmriti instead of the Constitution of India from the very first day”.
