JAMMU: Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Saturday accused the UT administration of ignoring people belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC), and demanded enhancement of reservation quota for members of the backward community from 4% to 27%.
To express concerns on the issue, NC leader Abdul Ghani Teli called a working committee meeting of the party’s OBC cell in Jammu, in which a resolution was passed demanding 27% reservation for OBCs as per the Mandal Commission.
Addressing the meeting, the provincial president of NC, Rattan Lal Gupta expressed anguish over the administration’s “negative attitude towards OBCs”, and alleged that the government was not showing any concern to address the pressing issues of this section of the society. “It is quite an irony that OBC children are not being provided any scholarships despite the fact that education is the key to uplift members of backward communities,” he said.
They also demanded that one-time certificates be issued to OBC community members and hostels be constructed for OBC children in every district of the union territory.
