US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s husband has been brutally attacked by an intruder who broke into their home.
Paul Pelosi, 82, was taken to hospital following the attack at their four-bedroom residence in San Francisco and is expected to make a full recovery.
The assailant was arrested.
A spokesman for Ms Pelosi said: “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr Pelosi.
“The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.
“Mr Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.
“The Speaker was was not in San Francisco at the time.”
Mrs Pelosi, a Democrat, has been a common target among supporters of former US President Donald Trump, however the motive behind the attack on her husband is not clear.
She also sparked a diplomatic incident earlier this year and infuriated China by visiting Taiwan, a disputed island claimed by Beijing.
As Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Pelosi, 82, is second in line to the presidency after Vice President Kamala Harris. She was elected for a fourth term as Speaker last year.
The Pelosis married in 1963 and have five children together.
Mr Pelosi is the the multimillionaire founder of a venture capital firm.
He was convicted of driving under the influence and causing injury after crashing his Porsche earlier this year. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five days in prison.
