Who is Ashwin Ramaswami, first Gen-Z Indian-American candidate to run for US state legislature – Times of India

Ashwin Ramaswami, a 24-year-old Indian-American, has received the endorsement of US Senator Jon Ossoff in his bid for the Georgia state Senate seat in District 48. Ramaswami, the first Gen-Z candidate to run for a US state legislature, is running as a Democrat against the incumbent Republican State Senator Shawn Still, who has been indicted for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Still was indicted alongside former president Donald Trump for the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol.
Senator Ossoff highlighted the stark contrast between the candidates, saying, “Ashwin is a former election security expert, and he is running against a MAGA (Make American Great Again) politician alleged to have participated in an effort to steal the 2020 election when Raphael Warnock and I were on the ballot.”
Ramaswami expressed his gratitude for the endorsement, acknowledging Senator Ossoff’s achievements in delivering infrastructure upgrades, tackling climate change, and strengthening cybersecurity in Georgia. He also highlighted the importance of protecting these successes from erosion by far-right Republicans at the state level.
As a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC), which oversees the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Senator Ossoff’s endorsement carries significant weight.
Who is Ashwin Ramaswami?
Ramaswami, who left his job in election security at CISA to run against Still, has already raised more than USD 280,000 in his grassroots campaign, outpacing his opponent. If elected, Ramaswami would make history as the youngest ever elected representative in the State of Georgia and the first Indian American to win this position in the state.
Born to parents who immigrated from Tamil Nadu in 1990, Ramaswami represents the Generation Z demographic, which encompasses those born between 1997 and 2012. He graduated from Georgetown University in May and is now focused on expanding healthcare access and investing in housing options.
