USA v Germany: Semi Final - FIBA Basketball World Cup

Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas has been around to know what it takes to win. And like most, “Agent Zero” is aware of the debate surrounding USA Basketball, especially after their 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup performance.

Failing to get a medal, critics now wonder if the world has caught up with USA Basketball. Team USA coach Steve Kerr admitted that it is no longer easy to win in the World Cup, especially with better players all over the world, NBC Sports reported.

Arenas thinks otherwise, batting that the current situation is entirely different from the 1992 Dream Team.

“Stop that narrative,” Arenas said. “The only thing that we don’t have over ’92 is intelligence to realize that ’92 put out a team to prove to the world we are dominant.”

To recall, the 1992 Dream Team was comprised of the top NBA stars at the time. That included Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Magic Johnson, among others.

From there, the 41-year-old cited how succeeding teams would improve by bringing in the top stars. As far as the Team USA team to the FIBA World Cup 2023, there were only a couple of All-Stars on the squad, namely Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, and Jaren Jackson Jr.

“These were the best of the best. Politics have changed,” Arenas added.

With USA Basketball gearing up for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the understanding is that Team USA will no longer be sending a “B-Team.”

LeBron James is open to suiting up for Team USA once more and is trying to convince several NBA stars to do the same, The Athletic reported.

Among the players that the 38-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star has reportedly talked to include Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum, and Draymond Green.
