The Detroit Pistons have begun their search for a new head coach, aiming to rebound from last season’s franchise-record-worst 14-68 record.
The team is considering several assistant coaches from championship-contending teams to lead their young and promising roster.
Detroit has now obtained permission to interview assistant coaches from the two Eastern Conference finalists, including Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Sean Sweeney and Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant coach Micah Nori, according to league insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The team is expected to request permission to interview more assistant coaches.
Nori assumed a significant role with the Wolves during the playoffs after head coach Chris Finch ruptured his right knee patellar tendon after a collision with his point guard Mike Conley Jr. during Game 4 of their first-round series against the Phoenix Suns at the end of April.
Pistons plan to make call to former Eastern Conference coach
The Pistons are also planning to interview former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who was recently let go by the team after they were eliminated in the second round of the 2024 NBA playoffs by the eventual champions, the Boston Celtics, in five games.
Bickerstaff led the Cavaliers to their most successful seasons in the post-LeBron James era, securing two playoff appearances in the last two years.
The 45-year-old also served as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2017 to 2019 and was an interim coach for the Houston Rockets from 2015 to 2016.
