FBI agent becomes latest victim amid rising tide of carjackings in Washington, DC – Times of India

In a distressing incident highlighting the escalating carjacking crisis in Washington, D.C., an FBI agent fell prey to a mid-afternoon armed carjacking on Wednesday in the 100 block of 12th Street, Northeast. The agent, driving a blue Chevy Malibu containing body armor and a radio, was reportedly held at gunpoint by two assailants.
Fortunately, the FBI employee emerged physically unharmed from the incident, and the stolen vehicle was discovered about 30 minutes later in the 1000 block of 15th Street, Southeast.While no arrests have been made in connection with this case, theMetropolitan Police Department‘s Carjacking Task Force, in collaboration with the FBI’s Washington field office, is actively investigating the incident.
This alarming event occurs against the backdrop of a significant surge in carjackings in the nation’s capital, with over 900 cases reported in 2023 alone. MPD data reveals that a staggering 77% of these carjackings involve firearms, intensifying concerns about the safety of residents and law enforcement personnel.
The broader issue of carjackings in D.C. has seen a troubling 104% increase this year, prompting intensified efforts from law enforcement agencies to address the root causes and implement preventative measures. Notably, the surge in carjackings is part of a broader trend of rising violent crime in Washington, which has spiked by more than 40% compared to the previous year.
As investigations unfold, the incident involving the FBI agent underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and strategic interventions to curb the escalating wave of carjackings in the nation’s capital.
