England manager Gareth Southgate is postponing any decisions about his future as the national team’s head coach.

The 53-year-old has held the position since 2016 and has led England to two consecutive UEFA Euro finals in 2020 (held in 2021) and 2024, the team’s first appearances in a major tournament final since their 1966 FIFA World Cup victory.

“I don’t think it’s good moment to decide these things. I need to have those conversations with important people behind the scenes. I’m not going to discuss that publicly first,” Southgate said following England’s loss against Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The Football Association, which oversees the England national team, has reportedly expressed its confidence in Southgate continuing in his role through the 2026 FIFA World Cup regardless of the outcome of the Euro final.

Meanwhile, England has lost in the final of the UEFA Euro for the second straight tournament, falling 2-1 in the 2024 edition held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday, July 14.

Spain’s Nico Williams opened the scoring in the 47th minute, while England winger Cole Palmer equalized in the 73rd minute. However, Mikel Oyarzabal clinched the victory for Spain in the 86th minute.

“At the end the legs started to go and you start to make mistakes. The players have pushed it until the 85th minute of the final game. They’ve been incredible, really,” Southgate stated after the game.
