Former Medical Chief of the Indian Army Lt General Ved Chaturvedi (Retd) called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “courageous” leader

Former Medical Chief of the Indian Army Lt General Ved Chaturvedi (Retd), hailed Prime Miniter Narendra Modi over the abrogation of Article 370 asserting that “leadership should be courageous”.

“We had everything in our country—money, resources, skills—but we did not have a courageous leader. I believe PM Modi is very courageous. Moreover, his courage is not reckless; he has also advanced the country’s economy,” Lt General Ved Chaturvedi (Retd), said at a special outreach program, Veterans with NaMo on Monday.

Lt General Chaturvedi further lauded PM Modi for development in the medical field and urged the Central government to create more opportunities for young doctors in the country so that they don’t go to abroad to pursue a career.

Abrogation of Article 370

In a major decision on August 5, 2019, the Central Government repealed the provisions under Article 370 of the Constitution of India, which granted a special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced in Rajya Sabha that the government had scrapped the special status granted to the state of Jammu and Kashmir by modifying Article 370 of the Constitution.

The government issued a Presidential Ordinance that stripped Jammu and Kashmir of special status under Article 370 and repealed Article 35A. The Rajya Sabha also passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, which proposed the bifurcation of the state into two union territories- Ladakh and Jammu-Kashmir.

The Supreme Court, on December 11, 2023, unanimously upheld the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370.

Article 370

Article 370 was a temporary provision added to the Indian Constitution due to the Instrument of Accession signed on October 27, 1947, by the last Dogra Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh.

The document provided for special constitutional status to Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370 allowed special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. By this provision, the laws applicable to other states were not applicable to the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
