After Jaishankar’s call, Iran allows Indian officials to meet 17 Indians onboard seized vessel | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Iran‘s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, on Monday informed external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, that Indian authorities will be allowed to meet with the 17 Indian crew members of the cargo vessel MSC Aries, which was seized by Iran’s military.
This information was conveyed during a phone conversation between the two ministers on Sunday, as per an Iranian readout.
On Sunday, Jaishankar spoke to his Iranian counterpart and sought early release of the 17 Indian crew members onboard a cargo vessel that was seized by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for its links with Israel. He reiterated India’s call earlier in the day for immediate de-escalation and restraint.
“We are following up on the details of the seized ship and soon it will be possible for the representatives of the Indian government to meet with the crew of the said ship,” the Iranian readout quoted Amir-Abdollahian as saying.
The cargo vessel, MSC Aries, which sails under the Portuguese flag, was reportedly seized by the Special Naval Forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Saturday. The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) stated on Saturday that it is collaborating closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the well-being of the 25 crew members and to facilitate the return of the vessel.
Shortly after the Iranian action, Adrienne Watson, the White House National Security Council Spokesperson, revealed that the ship’s crew consisted of individuals from India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Russia, and Estonia.
Meanwhile, in response to the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Sunday issued a statement expressing serious concern over the potential threat to regional peace and security. “We are seriously concerned at the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran which threatens the peace and security in the region,” the MEA said in the statement.
