Pulitzer Prize-winning author Barbara Kingsolver is set to receive another prestigious accolade. On Friday, September 5, the National Book Foundation announced that Kingsolver will be awarded its 2024 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, reported the People.
This lifetime achievement honor will be presented to her at the 75th National Book Awards Ceremony on November 20 in New York City.
Kingsolver, 68, will be recognized for her decades of impactful writing across multiple genres, including fiction, nonfiction, investigative journalism, poetry, and science writing. “Barbara Kingsolver’s exceptional writing and authenticity, on and off the page, has inspired generations of writers and readers,” said David Steinberger, chair of the National Book Foundation’s Board of Directors, in a press release.
Her body of work includes novels such as The Bean Trees and Unsheltered, as well as nonfiction works like Holding the Line: Women in the Great Arizona Mine Strike. Kingsolver’s 2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Demon Copperhead further solidified her place in American literature.
Reflecting on the honor, Kingsolver said, “It’s a remarkable and wonderful feeling to be appreciated and honored this way by my peers.”
The 75th National Book Awards ceremony will be held at Cipriani Wall Street, where Kingsolver will accept the award from her agent, Sam Stoloff.
