NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday inaugurated the 75th-anniversary celebrations of the adoption of the Constitution of India as “Samvidhan Diwas” at old Parliament building, officially known as Samvidhan Sadan. On this occasion, she released a commemorative coin and postage stamp dedicated to the milestone.
She also unveiled the first Sanskrit copy of the Constitution and its Maithili version.
Marking the event, President Murmu also released two books titled “Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse” and “Making of the Constitution of India & Its Glorious Journey.” Addressing the gathering, she reflected on the adoption of the Constitution 75 years ago, calling it a “historic moment.”
“Our Constitution is a living and progressive document. Through it, we have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development,” she said. She also emphasised the contributions of the 15 women members of the Constituent Assembly in shaping the nation’s foundational text.
President also urged all Indians to imbibe the constitutional ideals into their behaviour and do their fundamental duties, and “work towards achieving the national goal of a developed India by 2047.”
Highlighting recent developments, President Murmu said, “The law on women’s reservation has initiated a new era of women empowerment in our democracy.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also extended his congratulations to fellow Indians on Constitution Day, saying that the Constitution is a testament to years of dedication, sacrifice, creativity, resilience, and the collective wisdom of the people.
“I congratulate crores of Indians celebrating Constitution Day today. 75 years ago, on this day, our Constitution was codified. Under the leadership of the President, the entire country is together expressing gratitude towards the Constitution today. Today, crores of countrymen will take a pledge to take the country forward by reciting the Preamble of the Constitution. With the inspiration of PM Modi, in the year 2015, we took the historic decision to celebrate 26th November as Constitution Day. Our Constitution is the result of years of penance, sacrifice, ingenuity, strength and ability of our people. In this central hall, after about 3 years of hard work, they made a Constitution binding the geographical and social diversities of the country into one thread,” Birla said.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge extended wishes on this day. He also urged all citizens to protect the ethos of the Constitution.
“The 75th year of the adoption of the Constitution has begun today. I extend my warmest wishes to all Indians on this historic occasion,” the Congress president said in a post on X.
“The Constitution of India, painstakingly and carefully drafted by our foremothers and forefathers is the lifeblood of our nation. It guarantees us social, economic and political rights. It constitutes India into a sovereign socialist democratic republic,” he said.
The event marks the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. It officially came into force on January 26, 1950.
