Parliament Monsoon Session LIVE: On Trump Tariffs, Piyush Goyal Says India Will Take Steps To Protect National Interest

Parliament Monsoon Session Live: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that India will take all necessary measures to protect its national interest following the US announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective from August 1.

Speaking in a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha, Goyal said the government is carefully studying the implications of the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

“The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is holding talks with exporters, industries and all stakeholders and gathering information on their assessment of this issue. Government gives utmost priority to the safeguarding of welfare of farmers, labourers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, MSMEs and stakeholders of the industrial sector,” he said.

Shortly after Goyal’s statement, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day amid protests by opposition members over the Special Investment Region (SIR) issue.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was also adjourned until 4:30 pm due to an uproar by opposition parties, who protested against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not responding to a debate on Operation Sindoor and raised concerns about the SIR issue.
