Pro-Palestine protests: Indian-origin student Achinthya Sivalingan arrested from Princeton Universtiy – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Achinthya Sivalingan, a student of Indian descent, has reportedly faced arrest due to her involvement in an unauthorised protest supporting Palestine at Princeton University in the USA . Allegedly, another student named Hassan Sayed was also arrested alongside Achinthya amid escalating pro-Palestine demonstrations across various US university campuses.
According to Princeton University’s official website, Achinthya Sivalingan, hailing from Coimbatore, and raised in Columbus, Ohio, pursued studies in world politics and economics at Ohio State University.
“Born in Coiambatore, India, and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Achinthya studied world politics and economics at the Ohio State University. She has worked on a range of policy issues in the United States and in India through civil society organizations and the legal system, politics and movement building, and private philanthropy,” the university says on its website.
“Most recently, Achinthya supported policy and advocacy work for the climate adaptation, agricultural development, and nutrition portfolios at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Prior to her time at the foundation, Achinthya has worked on a congressional campaign in Ohio’s third district and on land rights and policy in India at the Centre for Policy Research. She’s interested in climate narratives and communications, especially as they relate to adaptation and development,” it added.
Approximately 100 undergraduate and graduate students initiated a sit-in at McCosh Courtyard in the early hours of Thursday morning, mirroring a wider trend of pro-Palestinian sit-ins unfolding nationwide. As student organisers began erecting tents, Princeton Public Safety (PSAFE) reportedly issued an initial warning to the protesters.
Achinthya and Hassan were allegedly arrested, prompting the other students to dismantle the tents.
